DESCRIPTION:Engaging in political work\, such as making one of the biggest fossil powers of the world fall\, can be an extremely uplifting and empowering experience for many of us. But at the same time we do admit that for some it is easier to express a political opinion\, to talk in public spaces\, to be taken seriously. Therefore we are hosting a skillshare on public speaking for women\, trans- and non-binary people (womxn) in the climate movement. During this skillshare we wish to create a safer space for womxn to talk about what it is like to speak on politics in public. We want to share tips and tricks and most importantly we aim to empower all of us to be more confident public speakers on the climate and ecological crisis. During the skillshare we will also talk about the Shell Must Fall! campaign\, the role of womxn in our organisation and how to represent Shell Must Fall as a speaker. \nWe believe that collectively we are stronger than any fossil power and that all of us have the capabilities to play an important role in this struggle! All womxn are welcome for this skillshare – from those with years of experience of public speaking to those who have never even imagined themselves talking to a crowd and those who know nothing about Shell Must Fall! \nPlease register by sending an email to info@code-rood.org with ‘womxns skillshare’ as subject. DESCRIPTION:Een half jaar geleden riep de Gemeente Utrecht de klimaatcrisis uit. Daar is in de praktijk nog weinig van te merken. Burgers worden niet geïnformeerd over de crisis\, er wordt volop geïnvesteerd in biomassa\, waar Shell zonder problemen door heel de binnenstad adverteert\, en Amelisweerd wordt nog altijd bedreigd. \nHoe prachtig de woorden in juli 2019 ook klonken\, zonder daden verliezen ze snel aan kracht. Daarom eist de Utrechtse Klimaat Coalitie dat de gemeente de volgende stap neemt.\nNa mooie woorden\, is het nu tijd voor daden! \nVelen wereldwijd lijden al onder de impact van klimaatverandering. In Utrecht bevinden we ons in relatieve rust. Die rust is slechts schijn. We bevinden ons in het Oog van de Storm!\nMaar ook de storm van mensen die deze gang van zaken niet langer pikt zwelt aan. Onze storm neemt toe in kracht en zal tijdens de klimaatmars door Utrecht razen. \nOp zaterdag 29 februari neemt de storm de binnenstad over. In a time of escalating climate crisis\, the coalition argues that incremental adjustments to Shell’s operation are not going to bring about the necessary changes for CO2 reduction\, environmental restoration or community and worker compensation. It is time to think bigger. \nWhat they are suggesting is nothing short of a ‘Green New Deal’ applied to an oil giant. Three have just been released\, and the only one remaining is being charged disproportionally and will immediately be put on trial on Monday. During the arrests\, police used excessive force which included hitting with battons. This is ridiculous. We will support our rebels tomorrow outside the police station. For the oppressed and exploited our current reality is already a dystopia. Nonetheless\, if current trends continue\, as seems to be the case\, this situation will only deteriorate further. \n“The probability of apocalypse soon cannot be realistically estimated\, but it is surely too high for any sane person to contemplate with equanimity.” ― Noam Chomsky \nDoes this realisation mean we should toss aside our hopes for a free and caring world? Raymond Williams wrote: “To be truly radical is to make hope possible\, rather than despair convincing.” But is it not naive to hold on to hope when we acknowledge our current powerlessness to change anything fundamental about our trajectory? Is the dream that ‘another world is possible’ not exactly that: a dream? Should we not be looking for a new way to continue the struggle while retaining our dignity? Look the future straight in the eye and scream into the abyss: “Bring it on!”? \n“Well of course I get depressed sometimes\, yes I do.” ― Angela Davis \nAt times\, this feeling of powerlessness can become overwhelming and paralysing. We aim to prevent this by tackling this feeling head-on and discussing it collectively\, to break open the taboo that surrounds it. We hope this will have a liberating effect\, and inspire us to continue the struggle\, no matter the odds. \nBecause if there is hope to be found\, we will find it in resistance. In the struggle. Shell is capitalism and colonialism. Shell is a climate crisis. \nWith Shell Must Fall! we are building a movement that can dismantle the power and destructive activities of the largest fossil multinational in the Netherlands. We demand an end to the Shell era; a fair transition for employees in the fossil industry; recovery for affected communities and ecosystems and a socialized energy democracy for everyone! Jongeren (en volwassenen) zullen opnieuw samen de straat op te gaan. Omdat de politiek nog lang niet genoeg doet\, de vernietiging van het klimaat en de natuur nu moet stoppen! Wij eisen een leefbare en rechtvaardige wereld voor onszelf en toekomstige generaties. \nDeze landelijke actiedag is onderdeel van de wereldwijde Global Day for Climate Action. Aan de vooravond van de VN klimaatconferentie COP25 in Chili zullen miljoenen jongeren op alle continenten opnieuw in actie komen om onze toekomst te beschermen en echte klimaatactie te eisen. Omdat we weten dat een betere wereld mogelijk is wanneer we daar samen voor vechten! \nIn Nederland ligt de focus dit keer op het organiseren van acties op zo veel mogelijk plaatsen in het hele land. We hebben iedereen nodig om deze actiedag zo groot te maken. \nHet thema wordt stilte\, dus bijvoorbeeld een stille mars. We hopen zo toegankelijker te zijn en zo kunnen mensen voor wie het anders teveel prikkels zouden zijn ook meedoen. Ook laat het een andere kant zien van de klimaatbeweging\, we zijn niet alleen een groep vervelende demonstranten\, we doen dit niet om herrie te schoppen. Het is ook een kans om alle slachtoffers van de klimaatcrisis te herdenken.

DESCRIPTION:Screening of La Buena Vida (2015\, 97 min) \nAND \nUpdate & Context will be provided by frontline activists of Red de Iniciativas Comunitarias (RICO) \nRotterdam is the heart of the coal transshipment sector in Europe\, and that alone puts the harbour of Rotterdam at the center of climate breakdown; there’s no other port in Europe that transships as much thermal coal and coking coal. Most of that coal gets transported to power plants and blast-furnaces in Germany\, France\, Belgium\, but also to either one of the four operating coal plants in the Netherlands. Added to this are the horrible practices involved with mining the coal\, but this does this not stop the harbour of Rotterdam from importing big quantities of it either\, and this includes coal from Colombia. \nThe so-called “discovery” of America in 1492 has caused the worst demographic catastrophe in human history\, with around 95 percent of the indigenous population annihilated in the first 130 years of colonization and about 12 million people sent from the African continent to the Americas being forced into slavery. The indigenous people of Abya Yala (Latin America) have been enduring land eviction\, the commodification of natural resources\, genocide and assimilation. In the north of Colombia\, the Wayúu people have been resisting for centuries\, defending their territory\, culture and way of life\, but now their way of life is being destroyed by the El Cerrejón coal mine. Extending for 700 square kilometers\, Cerrejón it is the world’s largest open-cast coal mine. \nThis documentary\, La Buena Vida\, offers a glimpse of what people in the Global South face every day on the frontline of climate justice; what (historic) role does the Global North play in these situations? What does resistance against coal companies in Colombia entail?
