We are demanding that the educational institutions and\nShell make their allies more transparent (the funding Shell pays to\nhigher education and research projects) and that Shell makes its\nintentions public (recruiting highly educated students directly from\nuniversity to maintain its power in the fossil fuel industry). DESCRIPTION:Yesterday during the “Shell must Fall” action in The Hague\, 33 Code Rood activists and solidarity Rebels were arrested. So far 4 of these have remained in custody for more than 24 hours. Three have just been released\, and the only one remaining is being charged disproportionally and will immediately be put on trial on Monday. During the arrests\, police used excessive force which included hitting with battons. This is ridiculous. We will support our rebels tomorrow outside the police station. Bring anything that makes a lot of noise.

DESCRIPTION:The fourteenth edition of the yearly 2.Dh5 festival is coming to BAK basis voor actuele kunst\, Utrecht on 1-2 February 2020\, with the theme “Defeating Dystopia?” \nSociety is being disintegrated by ecological\, economic and social crises and the extreme right and techno-dystopian reaction to these developments. For the oppressed and exploited our current reality is already a dystopia. Nonetheless\, if current trends continue\, as seems to be the case\, this situation will only deteriorate further. \n“The probability of apocalypse soon cannot be realistically estimated\, but it is surely too high for any sane person to contemplate with equanimity.” ― Noam Chomsky \nDoes this realisation mean we should toss aside our hopes for a free and caring world? Raymond Williams wrote: “To be truly radical is to make hope possible\, rather than despair convincing.” But is it not naive to hold on to hope when we acknowledge our current powerlessness to change anything fundamental about our trajectory? Is the dream that ‘another world is possible’ not exactly that: a dream? Should we not be looking for a new way to continue the struggle while retaining our dignity? Look the future straight in the eye and scream into the abyss: “Bring it on!”? \n“Well of course I get depressed sometimes\, yes I do.” ― Angela Davis \nAt times\, this feeling of powerlessness can become overwhelming and paralysing. We aim to prevent this by tackling this feeling head-on and discussing it collectively\, to break open the taboo that surrounds it. We hope this will have a liberating effect\, and inspire us to continue the struggle\, no matter the odds. \nBecause if there is hope to be found\, we will find it in resistance. In the struggle. It is there that prefiguration of radically different futures and fleeting utopias take shape. Besides\, far from everyone has given up hope. From renewed interest in Afro-futurism to the commons\, post-work and even fully automated luxury communism; hopeful ideas abound. \nNext to the theme “Defeating Dystopia?”\, the festival will host several dozen workshops\, discussion and talks about strategies\, in depth exploration and action around feminism\, queer\, anti-racism\, anti-fascism\, de-colonisation\, anti-militarism\, international solidarity\, climate/ecology\, labour & class struggles\, migration/no-border\, internet freedom/privacy\, right to the city/gentrification and all their intersections. \nFrantz Fanon wrote: “Each generation must\, out of relative obscurity\, discover its mission\, fulfill it\, or betray it.” Despite everything\, we are the generation that will determine the impact of the current crises. Shell is capitalism and colonialism. Shell is a climate crisis. \nWith Shell Must Fall! we are building a movement that can dismantle the power and destructive activities of the largest fossil multinational in the Netherlands. We demand an end to the Shell era; a fair transition for employees in the fossil industry; recovery for affected communities and ecosystems and a socialized energy democracy for everyone! Jongeren (en volwassenen) zullen opnieuw samen de straat op te gaan. Omdat de politiek nog lang niet genoeg doet\, de vernietiging van het klimaat en de natuur nu moet stoppen! Wij eisen een leefbare en rechtvaardige wereld voor onszelf en toekomstige generaties. \nDeze landelijke actiedag is onderdeel van de wereldwijde Global Day for Climate Action. Aan de vooravond van de VN klimaatconferentie COP25 in Chili zullen miljoenen jongeren op alle continenten opnieuw in actie komen om onze toekomst te beschermen en echte klimaatactie te eisen. Omdat we weten dat een betere wereld mogelijk is wanneer we daar samen voor vechten! \nIn Nederland ligt de focus dit keer op het organiseren van acties op zo veel mogelijk plaatsen in het hele land. We hebben iedereen nodig om deze actiedag zo groot te maken. \nHet thema wordt stilte\, dus bijvoorbeeld een stille mars. We hopen zo toegankelijker te zijn en zo kunnen mensen voor wie het anders teveel prikkels zouden zijn ook meedoen. Ook laat het een andere kant zien van de klimaatbeweging\, we zijn niet alleen een groep vervelende demonstranten\, we doen dit niet om herrie te schoppen. Het is ook een kans om alle slachtoffers van de klimaatcrisis te herdenken.

DESCRIPTION:Screening of La Buena Vida (2015\, 97 min) \nAND \nUpdate & Context will be provided by frontline activists of Red de Iniciativas Comunitarias (RICO) \nRotterdam is the heart of the coal transshipment sector in Europe\, and that alone puts the harbour of Rotterdam at the center of climate breakdown; there’s no other port in Europe that transships as much thermal coal and coking coal. Most of that coal gets transported to power plants and blast-furnaces in Germany\, France\, Belgium\, but also to either one of the four operating coal plants in the Netherlands. Added to this are the horrible practices involved with mining the coal\, but this does this not stop the harbour of Rotterdam from importing big quantities of it either\, and this includes coal from Colombia. \nThe so-called “discovery” of America in 1492 has caused the worst demographic catastrophe in human history\, with around 95 percent of the indigenous population annihilated in the first 130 years of colonization and about 12 million people sent from the African continent to the Americas being forced into slavery. The indigenous people of Abya Yala (Latin America) have been enduring land eviction\, the commodification of natural resources\, genocide and assimilation. In the north of Colombia\, the Wayúu people have been resisting for centuries\, defending their territory\, culture and way of life\, but now their way of life is being destroyed by the El Cerrejón coal mine. Extending for 700 square kilometers\, Cerrejón it is the world’s largest open-cast coal mine. \nThis documentary\, La Buena Vida\, offers a glimpse of what people in the Global South face every day on the frontline of climate justice; what (historic) role does the Global North play in these situations? What does resistance against coal companies in Colombia entail? We will give a short briefing and walk from there to the location where we will honour and remember the Ogoni 9 and the hundred-thousands of Ogoni people suffering from Shell’s oil extraction. \nDresscode: We ask everybody to dress in black; formal clothes are preferred. \nThe story of the Ogoni 9: \nKen Saro-Wiwa\, Presente!\nBarinem Kiobel\, Presente!\nSaturday Dobee\, Presente!\nNordu Eawo\, Presente!\nDaniel Gbooko\, Presente!\nPaul Levera\, Presente!\nFelix Nuate\, Presente!\nBaribor Bera\, Presente!\nJohn Kpuine\, Presente! \nShell has been waging a lethal ecological war in Ogoni land since 1958 when it first discovered oil reserves in the area. The oil exploitation has been concentrated in the coastal plains terraces to the north of the Niger delta\, which is home to the Ogoni people\, an ethnic group numbering 500\,000 people. \nMore than 900 million barrels of oil of estimated value 30 billion US dollars have been mined from the area since the discovery of the oil reserves. 96 oil wells connected five oilfields which were mostly operated by Shell and where gas has been flared twenty-four hours a day for more than thirty-five years. Between 1976 and 1991\, over two million barrels of oil polluted Ogoniland in 2\,976 separate oil spills. \nIn 1990 the Ogoni began to powerfully resist the destructive intervention of the oil industry and the Nigerian dictatorship in their home\, where despite of the stupendous oil and gas wealth of their land\, they were confronted with environmental degradation\, political marginalization\, economic strangulations particularly marked by an unemployment rate of over 70 percent\, slavery and possible extinction. What became known to as the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP)\, with Ken Saro Wiwa as its leader\, issued the Ogoni Bill of Rights (OBR) in which they demanded (a) the right to self-determination as a distinct people in the Nigerian Federation; (b) adequate representation as of right in all Nigerian national institutions; (c) the right to use a fair proportion of the economic resources of their land for their development and (d) the right to control their environment. This was followed by a massive peaceful protest in which 300\,000 Ogoni men\, women and children marched against Shell’s ecological war and the Nigerian government’s denial to the Ogoni of all rights in January 1993. \nThe protest was followed by an extremely violent crack down on the movement by the Nigerian government and Shell whereby over 1\,000 Ogoni people were murdered and 30\,000 people displaced. The conflict eventually culminated in the execution Ken Saro Wiwa along with eight other Ogoni leaders by the Nigerian government. \nMore than 24 years have passed since then but despite international protests\, no justice has been served to the Ogoni people as they continue to live in a state of crisis! While oil production has ceased\, pipelines operated by Shell still traverse the land\, creeks and waterways. Leakages – caused by corroded pipelines as well as bandits – mean that the area is still plagued by oil spills to this date. The Nigerian Government officially launched a clean-up programme in Ogoniland three years ago; however\, communities are still waiting for emergency measures to be taken and clean-up to begin. \nWhile Shell admitted that its oil operations have polluted large areas of the Niger Delta it resists charges of complicity in human rights abuses. However\, confidential memos\, faxes\, witness statements and other documents released in 2009\, clearly show the company regularly paid the military to stop the peaceful protest movement MOSOP against the pollution\, even helping to plan raids on villages suspected of opposing the company. Moreover\, Shell continues to undermine democracy and feed into corruption in the country by engaging in rigged trade deals with the government that serve business’ interests rather than the welfare of the people #OPL245. \nThis year\, 4 widows of the Ogoni 9 were finally able to bring Shell to court for its role in the murders. We stand in solidarity and support Esther Kiobel’s demands who fought for over 20 years to bring Shell to court in order to serve justice to her murdered husband Barinem Kiobel and the other Ogoni 9. We demand that Shell is brought to justice and pays reparations for the damages done\, including cleaning up the mess that has been left in the Ogoni land. But more than reparations we demand that such an atrocity will never happen again! \nThey tortured and murdered for oil\nOgoni People not Forgotten\nShell Must Fall!

Then after this short meeting\, those who want to can subtly distribute some propaganda (put stickers\, paste posters\, …). \nA short fact sheet on biomass stations: \n\nensure horrible air quality\,\nadd to the destruction of the living environments of the original people living on the land where they cut the forests\nadd to the global deforestation\nadd to the loss of bio diversity\npump in more CO2 than coal power stations!\n\n  \nThere is a lot of local resistance to this biomass station. DESCRIPTION:Tussen vrijdag 20 en vrijdag 27 september zal de eerste wereldwijde klimaatstaking plaatsvinden. Jongeren en volwassenen zullen in meer dan 100 landen de scholen en werkplekken verlaten om samen massaal de straat op te gaan. In Nederland wordt deze staking georganiseerd door een coalitie van grassroots initiatieven die oproepen tot decentrale acties op de 20e en om op vrijdag de 27e te staken en samen te komen in Den Haag. \nWij sluiten ons aan bij deze staking en roepen op om bijeen te komen in het blok voor klimaatrechtvaardigheid en systeemverandering. Omdat de klimaatcrisis slechts één symptoom is van een onhoudbaar politiek en economisch systeem. Een onderdrukkend systeem dat mensen tegen elkaar opzet en niet in staat is om klimaatverandering op een rechtvaardige manier tegen te gaan. Een systeem dat gebaseerd is op koloniale structuren van uitbuiting\, geweld en vernietiging\, dat al talloze levens eiste en nog zal eisen. \nZoals in Frankrijk de leus luidt: “Eind van de maand\, eind van de wereld\, zelfde systeem\, zelfde strijd “. Daarom: \nLoop met ons mee als je gelooft dat een meer rechtvaardige wereld mogelijk is!\nLoop met ons mee als je niet gelooft in verandering binnen het systeem\, maar in ontmanteling van het systeem.\nLoop met ons mee voor solidariteit met migranten\, (klimaat)vluchtelingen en tegen Fort Europa.\nLoop met ons mee als je gelooft dat we samen een strijdvaardige en intersectionele klimaatbeweging moeten bouwen om klimaatchaos te stoppen!

DESCRIPTION:On the 10th of November it has been 24 years since nine environmental and human rights activists in Nigeria have been executed on false accusations. The activists\, now known as the Ogoni Nine\, were working on the protection of the land and the people in Ogoni\, where Shell is destroying the environment and people’s lives in its ruthless search for oil and profit. \nThe struggle in Ogoni and the grave injustice that happened almost 25 years ago\, should not be forgotten! \nWe organise this open brainstorm meeting to discuss possible actions that we can do on the 10th of November. SUMMARY:From the NL to Free the Soil mass action & camp
DESCRIPTION:Free the Soil is a campaign to expose the devastating practices and impacts of industrial agriculture and the major role this industry plays in the escalating climate crisis. \nFree the Soil is organizing a mass action and camp to denounce industrial agriculture and the synthetic fertilizer industry. The camp and action will most likely take place around the third weekend of September\, exact dates are still to be confirmed. \nASEED is supporting Free the Soil by organising collective transport to the camp from the Netherlands. More details such as travel dates\, costs and how to sign up will follow in the coming weeks and months. \nWe encourage you and your group to take part in this struggle! Follow us at ASEED to stay up to date on how you can help make the camp happen by helping with benefit dinners\, spreading flyers\, and of course joining us to shut down YARA and Free the Soil.

SUMMARY:People´s AGM 2020 Brainstorm meeting
DESCRIPTION:In a collapsing world we know that there is no future if it includes Shell in the picture. After years of Shell having organized their own toxic brainwash festivals and greenwash campaigns to cover up their destructive business we want to strike back! \nTo help building the momentum of resistance against Shell during their scheduled AGM in May 2020 we want to organize a counter event to create a space that explores pathways and visions towards a future beyond Shell! \nTogether we want to kick start the plans for this event with an open brainstorm session. On the agenda: \n• Discussion on the focus and goals of a People`s AGM in May 2020\n• Presentation of a working plan for the organization of the event\n• Formation of working groups \nTo this meeting we welcome anyone who would like to help creating a podium for performances\, workshops\, movie screenings\, discussions rounds and presentations that range in their content from showcasing current initiatives that fight against Shell to exploring feminist and decolonial utopias beyond capitalist fossil fuel extraction.

DESCRIPTION:On the 8th of September we’re organising the biggest climate march in Rotterdam yet. This is still the most polluting city of the Netherlands\, and we’re planning on changing that. Everyone is participating. Students\, pupils\, teachers\, parents\, entrepreneurs and port workers unite. Share this event and invite all of your friends to join! \nWe demand that:\n• The polluter pays;\n• The climate transition is just;\n• The Rotterdam Port takes its responsibility and makes a green transition.\n• The cabinet honours the verdict of the judge in the Urgenda lawsuit; \nIn the weekend of 6/7/8 September the World Port Days are being organised in Rotterdam.
