Here\u2019s American mainstream media, late-night talk show host John Oliver calling for it: <br> \u201cIt\u2019s about moving away from a narrow concept of safety, that relies on policing and punishment, and investing in a community\u2019s actual safety net. Things like stable housing, mental health services and community organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Police: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wf4cea5oObY?start=1492&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday this actually happened in Minneapolis, with their city council <a href=\"https:\/\/theappeal.org\/minneapolis-city-council-members-announce-intent-to-disband-the-police-department-invest-in-proven-community-led-public-safety\/\">announcing the intent to disband the police department<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we\u2019ve come a long way after two weeks of protests, but it\u2019s also only happened after the brutal murder of George Floyd and after centuries of oppression of black Americans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the video ends with the clip of Kimberly Jones, that\u2019s been doing the rounds on the internet, this weekend:<br> \u201cYou BROKE the contract, when you KILLED us in the streets and didn\u2019t give a FUCK. For FOUR HUNDRED YEARS we played your game and BUILT your wealth. And when be BUILT our wealth on or own, you SLAUGHTERED US. YOU broke the contract. So FUCK your Target.
