{"id":9332,"date":"2019-05-20T17:19:05","date_gmt":"2019-05-20T15:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/code-rood.org\/?p=9332"},"modified":"2019-05-20T17:52:54","modified_gmt":"2019-05-20T15:52:54","slug":"climate-protectors-block-supply-of-coal-to-the-engie-power-station-in-rotterdam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/code-rood.org\/en\/2019\/05\/20\/climate-protectors-block-supply-of-coal-to-the-engie-power-station-in-rotterdam\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate protectors block supply of coal to the Engie power station in Rotterdam"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>45 people from We Stop Coal occupied the conveyer belts at the Engie  coalfired power station on the morning of the 25th of April at 06.15, bringing operations there  to a standstill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group demands urgently prioritised closure of all coalfired power  stations in the Netherlands by 2020, and that all subsidies and tax  breaks currently handed out to fossil fuel corporations (\u20ac7.6 billion  per annum in NL) be transferred to the renewables sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"We Stop Coal | 25 April 2019\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pQQI77p6gK8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wim Vos, a group founding member gave the following statement \n\u2018Climate change is no longer a problem of the future, people are already\n being hit hard across the globe &#8211; with floods, fires, droughts and \nextreme weather events, from Saint Martin to Mozambique. We consider it \nboth necessary and legitimate to take this next step, from public \nprotest to civil disobedience. That means we put our bodies in the way, \nwhere the change is most urgently needed.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CO2 emissions of the Netherlands have risen every year since the \nsigning of the Paris Climate Accord. The Dutch government has ignored \nits international obligations, and the ruling of its own highest court \non the Urgenda Climate case, mandating that it significantly scale up \nits ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the same period, \nnew tax breaks and subsidies have been authorized for the biggest \npolluters. The government\u2019s current proposals for emission reduction are\n wholly inadequate to the task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Engie facility currently in lock down has been promoting itself \nas \u2018going green\u2019 by incorporating biomass into its production mix. We \nStop Coal points out that the burning of wood pellets only leads to \nfurther deforestation and emits even more CO2 than does coal, the \ndirtiest of all fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018We are well organized and extremely determined\u2019 said Marianna \nPeters, \u2018but many more people need to step up, wherever they are, and \ntake bold action.
